Checklist for Parents to print

According to Board members of the Professional School Photographers Association International (a section of PMA), here are some of the key reminders for parents concerning their child's experience on Picture Day:
- Make sure the child is groomed appropriately when they leave the house. If their hair is combed and face is washed, then the child has a pretty good start on picture day. Our company will supply receptionists to help groom the student before pic-
tures are taken to ensure the best portrait possible.
- Do a visual inventory of all clothing. Make sure buttons, collars, jewelry, etc. are all in their proper place. Choose clothing material that does not wrinkle easily. Choose jewelry that is simple and does not distract from the portrait. Avoid tops with words.
- Choose a color or color(s) that the child feels good about wearing. If it is an option, let the child have a choice in the clothing selection. This helps make the portrait even more about them. Stay away from white and/or bold stripes or patterns whenever possible as it removes the attention from the child's face.
- Review photographs from previous years with your child to demonstrate how important the photographs are as cherished memories. The older you get the more valuable they become.
- Don't put pressure on the child to smile. Reinforce the positive things about the child. The sparkle in their eye, the great grin they have, or just how handsome or pretty the child is. Part of the experience needs to be about positive self-image. Getting them to relax and be themselves is key. It should be a fun experience.
- Remind the child not to be afraid to ask the photographer a question if he/she is unsure about posture, head tilt, hands, etc. The photographer is there to help and assist.
- Carefully study all the portrait options as there are quite a variety of backgrounds, poses, and products available, compared to just a few years ago. Digital photography has great new effects that broaden the appeal from traditional head and shoulder photography portrait units.
- Get haircuts about a week in advance. Fresh haircuts often need a week to settle in as well as look and feel natural.
- For older students in Junior High and High School, send hair and makeup tools with the student to school for touchups before the picture.
- Make sure nails are trimmed and clean. Hands will show in spring promotion pictures.
